BAT Bangladesh makes history with ESG Report

17 MAY 2022

BAT Bangladesh (BATB) has made history by becoming the first consumer goods company in the country to release an ESG report.

BATB is known as a pioneer of corporate social responsibility in Bangladesh and has played a pivotal role in introducing the concept of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) to the country.

A sustainable development partner to the Bangladeshi government, BATB helps support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is active in helping to set sustainable benchmarks in Bangladesh.

The launch of the 2021 ESG Report is another important milestone that highlights the contributions and positive social impacts being made by BATB in the country. It also illustrates how BAT is delivering on its purpose to build A Better Tomorrow™ and is putting sustainability front and centre.

Shehzad Munim, General Manager of BATB, said: “We are excited to publish our ESG Report and share the progress we have made on our ESG journey. BAT Bangladesh has been working as a sustainable development partner of the government and supporting eight SDGs through multiple community initiatives. The report stands as a testament to the company’s commitment to delivering a sustainable future.”

BATB’s ESG Report provides an overview of its many ESG initiatives and showcases the progress made over 111 years of operating in the country. As well as BATB’s ESG targets and ambitions, the report provides local context and includes spotlights on:

  •  The country’s longest-running afforestation programme which has distributed approximately 115 million saplings to diverse beneficiaries free of charge;
  •  An innovative renewable energy programme that provides solar electricity for more than 15,000 people in off-grid remote areas at the Chattogram Hill Tracts; and
  •  A safe drinking water initiative which has been progressing since 2009 to provide water free from impurities to more than 273,000 people from rural communities.

BATB officially introduced its first ESG Report at an annual stakeholder event, attended by distinguished guests from both private and public sector organisations.
